The Biotechnology Department is dedicated to providing contemporary quality undergraduate education that combines multiple areas of science and technology with the research and development of numerous types of living organisms. The structure of the programme ensures that students are exposed to courses that will prepare them for careers in Bio-medicine and forensics, quality control/assurance, Pharmaceutical development, Environmental protection, Agriculture and food production. Biotechnology aims to apply the latest molecular techniques to modern-day problems in industrial and environmental situations. Fundamental research in these areas will help to shape the development of the industrial world.
During lab time, students learn various techniques and processes for handling DNA, bacteria, plant cells and much more. Biotechnology programme is offered as a four-year applied degree. Courses cover a wide range of scientific subjects, from microbiology, chemistry and molecular biology to genetic engineering, pharmacology, and virology. Biotechnology attracts people who love science and nature and are eager to make a positive contribution to their natural and social environment.
The need to make available an information brochure for the Department is very vital in sharing information amongst students on the function and structure of the Department. This information is important for students to be conversant with the courses, course codes, credit units, admission requirements, examination and general registration procedures.
Currently, the Department offers a B.Sc. Biotechnology programme. Details of this undergraduate degree programme are listed in this handbook. The information in this handbook is recommended for students in order to have original information about the Department.
